Gluten-free taste test: Oreos vs. Double Cookies

Packages of Oreos and Double Cookies

Someone has to be out here doing the tough jobs, and today I am that person. I taste-tested to compare gluten-free Double Stuf Oreos and Albert Heijn Glutenvrij Double Cookies. For the record, I don’t know if you can even buy the Oreo brand in the Netherlands. I was gifted the Double Stufs before I left the States, and I mailed them to myself. But just in case you were wondering how the AH brand stacks up …

Literally, the Oreo stands taller than the AH cookie. There is way more “Stuf” in there, and it comes closer to the edges of the cookie crust, if you will. From the aerial view, you can easily tell how the Oreo stuffing veers to the edges, and the AH cookie leaves a lot of real estate uncovered. This means the Oreo has a much better ratio of cookie-to-non-dairy-filling. (Remember, these cookies are naturally vegan, so they’re essentially health food. It’s science.)

Also, if you’re the type who likes to open your cookie for eating, you’re better off with the Oreo, which splits quite easily. The AH stuffing grips the cookies more, which results in a crumbled mess when you try to separate the halves. (This photo shows my best version for both cookies. Sadly the others were more messy and I had to eat the evidence.)

Taste-wise, the Oreo is much sweeter and has a more satisfying crunchy texture, with just the right amount of chewiness. The AH cookie is bitter and immediately falls apart, giving you a grainy mouthfeel that makes you want to run to the mirror and check for all the black bits stuck to your teeth and gums. I know I’m biased because I grew up on the Oreo version, but I have to recommend it over the AH cookie.
